I apologize to the readers of my dairy about Obama and Indonesia. I do owe you the source where I got my information about his comments. The source is http://www.alternet.org/audits/91752.

The discussion about genocide in Indonesia and East Timor was based on the research that I did for my latest book "State of Darkness: US Complicity in Genocide since 1945". Most of the sources are original documents involving minutes of meetings of State Department officials and/or the President. Some of the sources are wires sent back and forth between embassies and the State Department. I was very careful in my research, reasoning, and application of the Genocide Convention due to the serious charges in the book. Any holes or weaknesses would destroy the credibility of the book when such seemingly outrageous charges are involved.

You could have added this to the first diary instead of making it a new diary. At the same time, you could have addressed the comments made about your diary instead of ignoring them.

Obama's comments about Suharto demonstate a sad lack of understanding about the Suharto years, his war crimes, and American complicity.

Nowhere in the article you cite does it support this statement by you in your diary. What we do have is an answer Obama made to a question about his earliest memory of a foreign policy event that shaped his life.

" ... what is your first memory of a foreign policy event that shaped you, shaped your life?" asked Zakaria.

What more would you expect when someone is talking about a memory from when they were ten years old?

You might have had something to support your premise if Obama had been asked to give a serious statement about Indonesian history, but that wasn't the question. You are basically complaining that Obama didn't go into enough detail to suit you.

While he should have mentioned the part the US played in the propping up of a not very nice government there, the attempt by ALternet to keep on trying to involve his mother (a civil employee, a freaking teacher for gawd's sake, what would she have influence over in those actions????) was totally uncalled for and a big distraction for me.

Why don't you just start your own blog if you want to monologue?

I believe these sites are not for preaching, but for interaction, for those that have the guts to defend their point of view.

My mom believed in Jesus, the Pope and FDR..... Just not necessarily in that order.

So what is the problem with Obama's answer? He was
asked about his personal experience, he answered the question, what did he get wrong???
